Tapestry of War

On February 24th 2022 Russian army attacked Ukraine. My family and I had to flee the country. Normal life and most of the businesses were disrupted. This print is made for a Ukrainian company ArmStreet, with employers of which I was making my way to the border. It makes medieval clothes, with production located in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Due to heavy shelling, production was stopped, and they decided to make t-shirts to support more thаn 100 workers and their families. Some people of the company joined the army, a lot of others volunteered and continue to do so. Some stayed in Kharkiv and Lviv and keep the company going, reviving the production.
The company produces medieval clothes and shields, so we chose medieval drawings and tapestries as an inspirations for the print. Specifically the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of the events of 1064–1066 and the Battle of Hastings. Feeling that we are now living through historic events, maybe the most important and groundbreaking events in our own lives, we chose this medium to portray the grandeur of this time, and maybe escape the rough violence, though portraying tragedy and trauma of war.
